Quick and dirty nursing news that’s worth sharing

Hello fellow Nurse, this is your weekly handoff. Some quick and dirty nursing news that’s worth sharing. Enjoy!

Something to think about

When meeting travel nurses I feel like the question "which company are you with?" almost even comes before "where are you from?". Understandably, nurses are always wanting to know which companies are the best and offering the best rates. Before even clicking this link, I bet you can guess a few of the big companies that will be on this list. However, they rate them on several different categories: best recruiters, best benefits, etc. What do you look for in a travel company? When I was traveling my company was smaller and didn't always have the highest rates, but my recruiter was amazing so I stayed. He would flat out tell me I wasn't going to a hospital if had heard bad things about it. I have heard too many nightmares about other travel nurses having recruiters who wanted them to work the high paying risky contracts just to get their own paycheck. If you're considering travel nursing the list may be worth a review.

Something to show appreciation

It's almost that time of year- Nurses week! A time when hospital management likes to drop off cheap hospital coffee mugs and throw pizza parties (Or maybe where you work they do better). In preparation for the celebration the American Nurses Association is doing a whole month celebration with a fundraiser where you can donate and simultaneously send a thank you to a nurse. By donating you will help the ANA support education programs, research and resources for health and well being. Your thank you note will then be featured on their donor scroll! If you're looking for a way to show your appreciation check out their site. If you are looking to help a nurse out directly I can also certainly share my venmo...

Something to make us nurses proud

Another bad ass nurse life saving story! Last week we read about a wedding and this week a cruise where a group of nurses jumped into action. It goes to show when we clock out... we never really clock out. A 50th birthday celebration turned into a rescue mission when an elderly woman in the dressing room started to show signs of distress and choking. They jumped into action and after a few good blows to the lady's back they were able to dislodge a piece of food. The medical crew didn't arrive until after the woman had already been saved. Do you think they got free drinks for the rest of the cruise?
