Quick and dirty nursing news that’s worth sharing

Hello fellow Nurse, this is your weekly handoff. Some quick and dirty nursing news that’s worth sharing. Enjoy!

Something that made headlines

This story made CNN headlines this week, but this article I found seems to have the most information. (It also breaks it down for people like me who still struggle to understand the complex ins and outs of all of this legal sh*t). Basically, this is important because it allowed a family to sue a nursing home for poor treatment that led to a patient’s decline. Initially, the nursing home had argued that they could not sue because of the middle man that is Medicare and Medicaid and the contracts being between the government and providers. However, the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed that decision. This is so important because it says that family’s still have the right to fight for the care that they are entitled to.

Something to make you proud

Three nurses from the US made it on the list for recipients of the Florence Nightingale Medal. If you are unfamiliar, this is the highest level of Red Cross international distinction that a nurse can receive. To have three from the US is a huge honor. To qualify the nurse must provide exceptional care to civilians that are victims of conflict or disaster and also helped with public health. The recipients include: Captain Brandi Branch, Patricia Chappell, and Captain Carlos Mendoza. (All of which have a long list of titles following their names of course!). Their stories and all they accomplished are truly amazing. I feel like a hero just getting through my shift, but these folks really went above and beyond and touched so many lives.

Something to warm your heart

A lot of good news this week to cover! Remember that great story we covered a couple weeks ago about a nursing student in remission? Well, it gets better. An update says Criste Parker just received her job placement as well. She will be working at University Medical Center in New Orleans! I love hearing updates on stories like this. The article includes a brief interview clip of her talking about her placement. Her daughters were there to see her graduate as well, so grab the tissues.
