Quick and dirty nursing news that’s worth sharing

Hello fellow Nurse, this is your weekly handoff. Some quick and dirty nursing news that’s worth sharing. Enjoy!

Something I've been watching

Potentially the most prolific serial killer of all time? I’m sure you’ve heard of the notorious Charles Cullen. The nurse who murdered dozens of patients over his 16 year career. The new Netflix movie starring Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain tells the story of his crimes through the eyes of his colleague/work wife, Amy Loughren who eventually assisted authorities in capturing this killer. While the movie does a great job of telling the dynamic story, what I really enjoyed was the interviews from the real Amy Loughren in the documentary also released by Netflix, “Capturing the Killer Nurse”. I really felt Amy’s distress deep in my bones and wondered how I would react if I discovered my work wife was murdering patients.

Someone I've been following

@Nursingthesystem is run by Dr. Claire Phillips, Healthcare Change Specialist, Coach, consultant, and speaker. Claire is passionate about igniting change. And while “igniting change” sounds like crazy idealistic nursing school BS and not at all how the “real world” of nursing runs - trust me, you will come away with a more empowered perspective. Her Instagram is a great way to see what she's about, while gaining tips that will change your mindset and help you rethink your skills and power as a nurse.

Something to talk about next shift

A nurse was suspended last week in Quebec, Canada for eating a piece of toast while on shift. “[T]he nurse had been suspended by the CISSS for having eaten a slice of toast with peanut butter while on duty on Oct. 2, describing the conduct as “a serious breach of the obligations of loyalty and honesty.” The health authority she works for has since rescinded her suspension as it was too severe - ya think?!? Is someone going to be suspended for making such a short cited and petty decision? You know the answer. Link to the full article below.
