Something to consider a win
Following a strike due to unsafe staffing ratios, this New York NICU was supposed to follow a contract that included updated nurse-to-patient ratios. However, this battle was apparently not won- yet. Failure to follow these new rules led to some angry nurses who sought arbitration. One nurse stated that the NICU was short staffed up to eight nurses on a shift. Insane. The article includes the back and forth where administration tries to stumble and explain why it is safe. Just hand over the 127k. Think of the babies for goodness sakes…In the end, as the title explains. They did indeed win. Let’s see if staffing gets better now.
Something to consider another win
Nurses across the board are winning this week it seems! 95% of staff at this Washington hospital agreed that they would strike unless some things were finally changed! “I voted to strike because I will fight to the end to keep my patients safe, even if it means going without pay.” Said ICU nurse Atalia Lapkin (my kind of nurse). This issue began in April when they had a informational picket, with no budge. So, the strike was proposed on Wednesday, and just yesterday, June 22nd, this Multicare hospital in Washington came to an agreement. Their nurses will be getting a 12-24% raise, ratification bonuses of $3,500, dedicated break nurses, a charge nurse and flex nurse for each unit. I hope this energy spreads like wildfire!
Something disappointing
Imagine graduating nursing school and having to put this school that’s shut down and is all over the news as the place you received your training. Awkward. Especially because they are being closed for “Failure to correct regulatory deficiencies and comply with directives while on approval with warning status”. So sounds like they had plenty of notice to get their shit together- since September of 2022 actually. The article states that any first year nursing students in the program will need to find another school… may be for the best. I would love to sit in on one of their classes to learn just how awful it could be. Are they teaching their students to push potassium?
