Quick and dirty nursing news that’s worth sharing

Hello fellow Nurse, this is your weekly handoff. Some quick and dirty nursing news that’s worth sharing. Enjoy!

Something inappropriate
A contracted elementary school nurse has been charged with harassment after the discovery that she had been sending nudes to high school students within the district via snapchat. Additionally, Kylie Roberts was found to have been buying alcohol for students. The woman is 39. What kind of- sorry, but there’s no other way to say it- loser wants to be partying it up with some high schoolers? If you can figure out how to work snapchat, I think you can figure out tinder to find someone you’re own age, creep. Not a good look for contract nurse.
Something that will make you feel sick
With seniors being very high risk for covid, you would think that the rates for antiviral administration would be high. However, this article discusses that actually only 18% of seniors received antivirals. 41% of nursing homes reported never having used antivirals by the end of 2022. They chalk it up to lack of access mostly- they found that larger and better rated nursing facilities had a higher rate of access to antivirals. What’s even more sickening is the fact that facilities that were for-profit with more use of Medicaid and also non-white residents were less likely to receive antivirals. Had all nursing facilities had access to antivirals, would the death rate have been as high as it was? These statistics that are coming to surface post pandemic are sickening.
Something criminal
I am so glad that there are people willing to do this job, but you could not pay me enough money to be a prison nurse. Nathanial Clark Yeoman is facing charges after cornering and attacking a nurse in a medical room. He kept the door closed in the medical room with a computer mouse and refused to open the door after direction from an officer. The nurse is alive, but with many injuries. Yeoman is now charged with false imprisonment, solicitation to commit a felony, and interference with official acts. He was already in there for sex abuse to a child. So who the hell allowed this nurse to be left alone with him??

Poor Guy
Names have been omitted in this story to protect the identity of all involved in this hilarious tale.
I have been a RN for 45 years, but I have never forgotten this one patient. It was probably the year 1988.
At the time, I was working 7p-7a on a MedSurg unit when I was notified that I would be taking care of a gentleman coming out of surgery. I don't remember what caused his injury, but he had an erection that would not go down. For the entire night shift, it was my responsibility to inflate the pediatric blood pressure cuff that was placed on his erect penis that was taped down on his leg. I had to inflate the cuff every 30 minutes up to a certain number then keep it inflated for 30 seconds. This was done until the end of my shift.
I was off the next couple of days, and to this day, I never found out what happened to him.
