The Handoff - Issue #27

Quick and dirty nursing news that’s worth sharing

Hello fellow Nurse, this is your weekly handoff. Some quick and dirty nursing news that’s worth sharing. Enjoy!

Something from the fire

Not a nurse, but a hero story for sure. As I am sure you have all seen- there is currently a fire devastating Maui. The death toll is still rising at 53. This article covers the story of Dr Reza Danesh, who at the first word of the fire, packed his mobile clinic to set out and help the victims. He treated burns in the back of his van as he transported them to evacuation shelters. He talks about treating a woman’s burns while she explained loosing all of her pets and seeing her neighbor die. Dr Danesh did his best to also assist those with asthma and lung issues. With clinics, urgent cares, and pharmacies burning down, supplies and resources have become very limited. I have included a site with more information on where to donate.

Something from the government

Just yesterday, August 10th, it was announced that the Biden-Harris administration will be using $100 million dollars to “grow the nursing workforce”. Amazing. The article lists the foundations that the money will be divided between: an LPN to RN program, an advanced nursing workforce education program, and a couple others. All great things! The part that made me giggle a little is the actual article though- you can always tell when non healthcare workers write one of these. The top quote is literally just “Nurses are essential to our Nation’s healthcare system.” You don’t say?

Something setting a record

16 year old Elliana Tenenbaum will make history as one of the youngest nursing school graduates, and THE youngest graduate from Arizona State university. Tenenbaum states “Age doesn’t matter if you have a passion for the profession”. She graduated from high school earlier and by taking college courses in high school, she was able to complete ASU’s accelerated RN program in just 6 months. A truly incredible story of a very focused teen. Knowing myself at 16, I would NOT have been a great nurse then, but this teen obviously has some drive that my teen self did not. Where can Elliana become employed though? Don’t most hospitals have an 18 and older employment rule? Maybe she can work on a peds unit….
