Quick and dirty nursing news that’s worth sharing
Hello fellow Nurse, this is your weekly handoff. Some quick and dirty nursing news that’s worth sharing. Enjoy!

Something I found funny
Scrolling through reddit last week and found this thread I couldn't stop reading. "What was the stupidest thing they teach in nursing school?" Everything we are all thinking is mentioned....Hospital corners, massages, flushing a PEG between every. single. med. I could go on but check it out for yourself for a good laugh. What was the most useless thing you were taught in nursing school?
Something heartwarming
Angelie Kuka a new emergency room nurse was having a hard time witnessing all the suffering during the height of covid and was looking for an artistic outlet. She began collecting the throwaway bits from plastic med caps and needle caps to make an anatomical heart. I love this. So wholesome. I love how the pandemic really brought out a lot of people's artistic sides and visual displays of love became commonplace. I hope this is one covid trend that sticks around.
Something to think about
I've been listening to this podcast "The Self Care Unit". Its a podcast that explores mental health in healthcare. Its interesting to hear other healthcare professionals talk about their struggles as they are so relatable. I really enjoyed the last episode I listened to about secondary trauma with Sam Calvin. Secondary trauma isn't something that is talked about much. In healthcare its necessary to compartmentalize in order to effectively continue with your day. Nurses are suffering and nothing is being done about it. We go home feeling guilty, stressed, sad and then often we cope in unhealthy ways. On the show one of the women talk about the lost "culture of community". Pre pandemic, it seemed like there was a lot more time for connection. You know those nights where everyone is wrapped in a warm blanket and someone puts the kettle on. Sometimes you're talking about the code that happened on days, sharing stories about the night you had to call "that" physician at 2am, sometimes its not even nursing related but that camaraderie is essential to work through the stresses of the job. What if the culture was such that we had time in the day, or scheduled debrief days where we could check in with each other?
